Bio

Leonardo Paoli is an Senior Fellow focused on energy and transport modelling, and on clean energy technology supply chains. Leonardo is collaborating with the European Transport and Energy Research Centre of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis (ETERC) on modelling and data analysis.

Previously, Leonardo was an energy analyst within the Energy Technology Policy division of the International Energy Agency, a position he held from 2019 to 2023. In that role he coordinated the work of the Global Electric Vehicle Outlook – the IEA’s annual report on developments in electric mobility across the globe – and had a leading role in the analysis cross-sectoral clean energy technologies and their supply chains which underpinned the Energy Technology Perspectives 2020 and 2023 reports. More specifically, he worked on the analysis of technologies and policies that are required for the decarbonization of the transport sector with a particular focus on battery technology and battery metals supply chain. He has also focused on innovation needs for cross-cutting clean energy technologies in the IEA scenarios, including the Net-zero by 2050 roadmap.

He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge with a thesis on energy efficiency and energy modelling, and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Imperial College London.
